In Their Words: Fairpoint Communications
“We are very pleased with our decision to go with Occam. It was absolutely the right choice. From a support and product quality standpoint Occam is definitely ahead of its competition. They take care of their customers, which is key. They go above and beyond most companies when troubleshooting issues. They work with us to figure out where the problem is even when the problem is not in their system. Their ‘partnership' approach to solving issues has been a very positive thing for us.”

In their words: Bayland Telephone
“We decided to move from ATM to IP for competitive reasons; we knew we needed to deliver video and Triple Play services. We looked at all the different providers and looked at the limitations of ATM. We chose to go with IP. At that time there weren't a lot of manufacturers offering an IP option. As we look back, we feel that choosing Occam was the right decision. That's been solidified as we've seen the company's commitment to its product roadmap and to supporting its customers. We view Occam as one of the leaders in the Ethernet and IP market.”

In their words: Blackfoot Telephone
“Occam is a very forward looking company that adheres to a pure vision of an all IP world. We chose the Occam BLC because we share that same vision, and we have never wavered. It is important to us that the company has not been swayed from their vision.
“We view the new 10 Gigabit Ethernet BLC 6314 Blade as a great example of Occam's forward thinking. They look to the future and develop a product to can meet our needs. The availability of 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to the network is important to us as we contemplate delivering video and building larger networks. It's clear that we will need to have the bandwidth that this product provides to deliver higher-bandwidth services like video and IP TV.”

Occam was founded with a clear vision – the simplest solution is always the best. To us, that meant using IP and Ethernet as core, foundational technologies. While most people agreed that existing solutions for delivering converged telecommunications services were too complex, too costly, and too limited, they didn't believe that these technologies were the answer. However, six years later it's clear that our vision of IP and Ethernet in the access network has become a reality.
Today, most people agree that IP and Ethernet are the future of telecommunications, providing the bandwidth to deliver advanced services easily and cost effectively. Advanced services – IPTV, VoIP, FTTN, FTTP – enable new revenues and provide the competitive weapons Telcos need to stave off the competitive threat of cable.
Since articulating our vision, we have created a new product category, the Broadband Loop Carrier, a new class of local loop platform that dramatically simplifies delivery of broadband and voice services over the local access network while future-proofing that network. We were the first to coin the term Broadband Loop Carrier to describe this new class of equipment. Our competitors thought we were crazy. IP and Ethernet?
It wasn't easy. We spent those six years doing complex engineering with a unique team of both IP/Ethernet and traditional telecom engineers working side-by-side. The result is patented technology that our competitors are trying to imitate, but are years behind.
All along we have stayed true to our vision. From the beginning we have worked with forward thinking telcos who understood our vision and believed in it – companies like Kansas-based Rural Telephone and The Armstrong Group, based in Pennsylvania, who were the first to install our products. And, we continue to work with hundreds of visionary telcos like you across the United States and Canada.
We have maintained our focus. And, the results have been extremely rewarding. Today, we are acquiring new customers at double-digit rates each quarter, we are profitable and we have become the dominant player in the second and third tier of the IOC market. Against the odds, we have succeeded in realizing our vision.
Thank you for sharing our vision.
Bob Howard-Anderson

Configuring a BLC Ethernet Interface
To pass reliable, error free data between two Ethernet devices, each must have the same settings for Speed (10/100/1000Mbps), Duplex (half/full) and Media (crossover/straight through). By default copper Ethernet ports on the Occam BLC auto negotiate and find the appropriate connections. In fact, Occam recommends that you let the auto negotiate function do what it has been designed to do since forcing a device is problematic, adding administrative overhead and over burdensome trouble shooting.
However, there are instances in which the auto negotiate function requires additional measures. When this occurs it becomes necessary to force all three parameters to match on the link. Click here for more info.

New Telco Leaders Join the Leading Edge
Alabama 's largest member-owned telephone cooperative, Farmer's Telecommunications Cooperative , recently selected the Occam BLC 6000 to build a single access network to deliver voice and ADSL2Plus services now and video in the future. Prior to deploying the BLC 6000, Farmer's had three separate networks, one for transport, one for delivering TDM voice and one for delivering DSL. Click to read more.
Westphalia Telephone Company is using the BLC 6000 and Occam ONTs to build an active fiber network in its CLEC operations. The new active fiber network significantly increases the available bandwidth for delivering Triple Play services. With the extra bandwidth, Westphalia will be able to offer an additional video channel to its subscribers and increase their Triple Play footprint. Additionally, the Michigan-based telco will use the BLC 6314 Blade to upgrade its fiber transport rings 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
Telcos in Ontario, Canada are sold on the BLC 6000. Thirteen Ontario-based telcos have become members of the leading edge in the last several months, including Amtelecom Communications, Cochrane Telecom, Execulink Telecom, Gosfield North Communications Co-op, Huron Telecommunications Cooperative, The Nexicom Group, NRTC Communications, Ontera, Peoples Tel, Roxborough Telephone Company, Tuckersmith Communications, Westport Telephone Company and Wightman Telecom.
According to Wayne Lynch, Manager of Transport Infrastructure for Ontera, “We selected the Occam platform because it offers the most flexibility of any BLC product of which we are aware. We are very pleased to have found a single product from which we can deliver such a wide array of services over an IP network.”
Plant Operations Manager, Rob Van Aaken, of Tuckersmith Communications says, “We have been an Occam customer since July 2005. Installing the BLC 6000 System was a snap – it took almost no time to configure the network and turn up service for our customers. We find the company very responsive and easy to deal with. If we encounter problems, the Occam support team deals with them right away. They are a company you can rely on.”

RVW and Occam Host Highly Productive Business and Technology Symposium
Last week RVW, Inc. and Occam hosted a three-day symposium in Columbus, Nebraska. Focusing on IP in the access network, the event featured a variety of educational sessions, such as The Evolution of PON and Active Ethernet; hands-on demos such as how to set up and extend loops for video applications over ADSL2+; and provided customers with the opportunity to examine all the new Occam products including the new retro-fit kit for the AFC48 cabinet. The symposium was well attended by telcos from Nebraska and neighboring states with all three days full to capacity. Here are a few comments from the participants:
"I enjoyed the information presented at this workshop, and would attend another of the same nature. While I realize most of the presentation was put on by a specific vendor I felt they did a good job presenting the technology more so than trying to sell their product."
"I now see why IP is where everyone is heading and Occam certainly has the best pure IP/Ethernet solution that I have seen. No one has a GigE solution like this".
"Occam should do more of these events, it was excellent!
