In Their Words

“We've been using the IP and Ethernet-based Occam BLC 6000 since 2003, and we are very pleased with our decision to make the technology shift and with our selection of the Occam BLC.

“One of the real benefits of the Occam product is its ability to transport and deliver a wide variety of services from a single piece of equipment.  Once we built a video headend, turning up IP Video service was a relatively painless process for the company.

“We are very comfortable working with Occam. The staff has broad experience in the IP/Ethernet space, their support is superb and they are always ready to help us with planning our networks.”

Eddy Jones
Plant Operations Manager

In Their Words

Brad Lyon

“We conducted video field trials to evaluate products from Occam and two other manufacturers.  The Occam BLC was up, running and delivering video in two hours, while it took the second manufacturer two days to deliver video and the third never delivered the service.  The simplicity and ease-of-use of the Occam product is very important to us.  It save us time and money.

“We like the fact that Occam is a very forward thinking company.  We trust that regardless of the applications and services our customers require, Occam will be a step ahead with the products and solutions that will enable us to deliver them.

“Occam products are all standards-based IP and Ethernet, which means we won't be faced with compatibility issues down the road.  That means a simpler network to install, configure and manage.”

The CEO Connection

Bob Howard-AndersonLet me be the first to welcome you to the Occam Winner's Circle!  On October 19, 2006 Deloitte & Touche selected Occam Networks as the Number 1 Fastest Growing Technology Company in North America.  We join the ranks of some very successful past Fast 500 winners, including Google, Palm Source and Webex to name just a few.

We were selected by Deloitte after the company conducted its own database market research into fast-growing companies based on revenues. We have grown from approximately $80,000 in annual revenues in 2001 to more than $39 million in 2005, a five-year growth rate of 48,948 percent.  Earlier in the month, Occam was also selected by Deloitte as the Number 1 fastest growing designation in its Technology Fast 50 for the Los Angeles region.

As you may imagine, we are delighted to have achieved this impressive milestone.  But, we couldn't have done it without all of you.  We view this award as a testament to the forward thinking customers who dared to go with a young company with fresh, innovative ideas and to our employees who have dedicated themselves to fulfilling our vision of the future.

I'd like to thank all of you who have embraced our innovative, flexible and scalable suite of products. I thank you for deploying our cutting-edge technology to deliver new, advanced services like Triple Play, and applaud you for taking advantage of the opportunities these new services provide to build stronger, more profitable businesses.

We will commemorate this noteworthy occasion at TelcoTV, and we hope that you will visit us in Booth 901 to help us celebrate in the Winner's Circle.

IPTV represents a revolution in telecommunications – one that impacts all facets of the business and one that will define telecom carriers for decades to come. On November 6-8 leading players in the IPTV market will meet in Dallas at TelcoTV for a three-day conference and trade show.  Conference presenters include key industry analysts and trade groups such In-Stat, Forrester Research, NTCA and Broadband Service Forum; key IPTV equipment manufacturers including Occam, Aware, IneoQuest, and Myrio; and service providers such as Comporium and BellSouth.

Occam's own Russ Sharer, Vice President of Marketing, will participate in a panel discussion, “Trolling for Revenue.” The panel will explore various case studies of operators who have created revenue streams with unique services. Among the topics to be discussed are business offerings such as business Ethernet, Transparent LAN Service (TLS) and IP Telephony supporting vertical industries such as banking, local government and education, as well as new residential services including gaming, video caller-ID, and VPN services for telecommuters. Betty Cockrell, Director of Industry relations for BSG Clearing Solutions will co-present with Sharer.  The session takes place 3:20 – 4:20 on Tuesday, November 7.  Make sure you stop by to learn how you can boost your bottom line!

Join Occam Networks at Booth 901, as we take a victory lap in celebration of our selection as the Number 1 fastest growing technology company in North America by Deloitte & Touche.  There will be live interactive racing games, footage of memorable racing events, and the chance to win your very own Occam Orange Lamborghini, a 1/18 die cast Lamborghini collectors model.  One lucky winner will even get a taste of open-wheel racing at the Skip Barber Racing School.  The winner will get the chance to drive a Formula Dodge race car with braking, cornering and accelerating capabilities beyond that of even the most powerful sports car.

And, of course, we'll have ongoing demonstrations of how the Occam BLC can put your telco in the Winner's Circle, FAST!

Cost-Effectively Meeting Increasing Bandwidth Demand
Leverage your existing infrastructure to deliver high-bandwidth services.

Some in the industry say that VDSL2 is the best technology for delivering high-speed copper services.  But, what if you could get the same or better rates without moving to a new technology, without investing in new infrastructure, today?  You can, with ADSL2Plus bonding.  Rather than delivering 30 Mbps of bandwidth to 2500 feet, you can now deliver 40 Mbps to 5000 feet or more in some cases – without the additional cost of shortening your loops and without the additional investment in the time and resources it takes to incorporate another technology in your network.  Leverage your current infrastructure with bonded ADSL2Plus and get better, faster, cheaper results.

For a sample of the kind of throughput bonded ADSL2Plus offers, review the following charts.

Tech Tips
The latest from the Occam Customer Support team.

Occam Networks recommends that you periodically confirm that the connectors on your BLCs are properly seated and securely fastened. Loose connectors may cause interruptions in service.  To make sure that the ADSL bridge clips and subscriber/T1 interface cables are correctly fastened, follow Tech Tip#2.

We hope you find this Tech Tip helpful in managing your IP and Ethernet access network.

Leading Edge
New Telco leaders join the Leading Edge.

Ben Lomond, one of the largest independent operating companies (IOCs) in Tennessee, is upgrading its access network to deliver Triple Play services with the Occam BLC System.  The telco found that the during its evaluation of access platforms, the Occam BLC equipment exceeded competitive products in all categories. And, with the Occam Remote Terminal Cabinet Retrofit Kit, Ben Lomand was able to migrate to an all IP platform and to add IP video without replacing its Next Level cabinets.

“We plugged Occam's blades into our network and they were up and running in as little as 15 minutes,” Ray Cantrell, network operations manager for Ben Lomond. “Engineers from the other companies we invited in required two or three visits to make their products work.”

Leading Edge
Gearing Up For the Future

Working Together - MolallaIn 2002, Comporium Communications, the 20th largest incumbent local exchange carrier in the United States, selected Occam's innovative Broadband Loop Carrier (BLC) system to deliver high-speed broadband services and begin the migration to an IP Packet based network.

The Rock Hill, S.C.-based independent telephone company also needed to replace 16,000 aging POTS lines in two of its central offices (COs) equipped with a Nortel DMS 500 switch. Comporium installed Occam 6150 and 6151 Lifeline POTS Blades in its Central Offices connecting the blades to the Occam 6640 Subscriber Trunk Gateway Blades. This provided a GR-303 Class 5 switch interface to its existing DMS 500.  More importantly, it provided a migration path to a softswitch architecture in the future.

Comporium always planned to control these POTS ports with a softswitch and knew with an Occam solution they could simply remove the BLC 6640 Gateway Blades and connect the POTS ports via IP directly into the softswitch with no added cost.

Four years later, Comporium's network continues to grow and evolve in to an IP- based network, and, as an added bonus, the BLC 6640 GR-303 blades will be re-deployed throughout the network providing GigE optical Transport and T1 Aggregation.

"The Occam BLC has been an access network workhorse for us over the last four years and has allowed our network to continually evolve with each next generation of technology," said Harold Vess, Asst. Digital Switching Supervisor.  "We made the right choice when we decided to deploy the Occam BLC."

Working Together
Occam and WRT celebrate partnership with BBQ, music and good friends.

wrt3On September 27, Occam joined forces with West RiverTelecommunications (WRT) of Hazen, North Dakota in a celebration of the partnership that has enabled the telco to move to an IP and Ethernet access network capable of delivering new advanced services today.  The celebration included a tour of the WRT facilities, a supply of everyone's favorite BBQ food and beer at the Hazen Golf Course, as well as music, dancing and a few short speeches.  Attended by WRT employees and their families, a few lucky attendees left the event with either a Leatherman Juice 2 or a Cabella gift certificate for their favorite sporting item.
