Twisted Pair
There was an idea. I swear.
That Lisa and Mark did share,
Voice in an RT,
Must use IP.
What an incredible twisted pair.
By Buck Graham Director of Sales Engineering
Rock ‘Em
There once was a company called Occam.
The competition continually tried to nock ‘em.
Despite how they tried,
It wasn't a pleasant ride,
So Occam continued to rock ‘em.
By John Sechler
Director of Sales
Occam's Razor
A company named Occam was born.
A triple-play solution was sworn.
Those telcos took notice
Of Occam's razor focus.
All competitors look out, we forewarn!

Do not increase beyond what is required.
Inconsistencies, ambiguities and redundancies will not inspire.

Is now a telecoms savior,
And continues to win while others will expire.

May the luck of the Irish be with you on this upcoming St. Patrick's Day. Like the Irish, Occam's good fortune continues as we were just named the “Best Network and Security Company of the Year.” The sidebar on the left provides more information on our most recent award.
We believe that our success owes more to great products, technology and customers than just luck. Throughout the year I frequently visit many of our 200-plus Occam customers, because I think that customer communications is an invaluable tool for keeping Occam “in sync” with your needs and new directions. During my visits, I typically talk with a variety of people – from company presidents and general managers, to CO managers, to technical staff members. One of the most consistent messages I hear from everyone is how pressured you each feel to deliver "new services." I hear reasons such as your customers demand these new services, it's a new revenue opportunity and/or my competitors are doing it, so I must do it.
I also hear your concerns about the risks and uncertainties that you are experiencing as you move toward delivering these new services. You tell me that you must rebuild parts of your network, and that you and your team must learn and deploy new technologies, among other things. Like anyone faced with enormous change, each of you has the tendency to want to stay with the old technologies that "worked for us in the past." It's only natural.
While we all believe that IP/Ethernet is the answer for delivering new services most effectively – whether it's IPTV, which is still "catching up" to CATV, or VoIP, or just better control and management of the balancing of data, voice, and video services – we know there is still the need to get “all the pieces right.” We anticipate that this will be an ongoing evolutionary process for the near future.
Fiber vs. copper is also a source of concern for many of you. While a dedicated, full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet fiber pipe directly to the subscriber is the most powerful and future-proof solution available, some of you are concerned that you cannot justify fiber economically.
Those of you that choose not to run fiber to the premise are still confronted with the growing need to meet demands for higher and higher bandwidth from shorter and shorter copper. How will you be able to do this? While this is certainly a challenge, ADSL2Plus bonding provides an excellent solution to help you meet this challenge. And, we believe that we will see mass deployment of ADSL2+ Bonding solutions this year. Additionally, there is the potential that VDSL2 will become a mainstream technology in 2008 or 2009, with the advent of next generation silicon chips.
Whatever your choice, Occam wants to work with you to determine the best solution for your network today and help you evolve in the future.
Occam was founded on the idea that our world is constantly changing and evolving. We believe that Ethernet and IP is the future of telecommunications. Our technology and products reflect that. But along with change and evolution, Occam was also founded on the principle of keeping things simple and providing solutions that "work." We continue to adhere to that principle today.
The bottom line? Our journey to the network and services of the future requires that we all embrace change. During that journey Occam remains committed to working through these changing needs and technologies with you and to keeping your networks simple, cost-effective, flexible, and scalable.

President and CEO, Occam Networks

Adds CRM System and Customer Portal
In Fall 2006 Occam Customer Support (CS) installed a new Customer Relationship Manager system. Since its installation the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) has been using the system to create and track customer support issues via a ticket system.
The CS team also began testing a web-based Customer Portal that provides customers with secure access to the tickets opened for their company. The Customer Portal has been tested with a limited set of early portal users. These early users have been very positive about the new portal.
The Occam Customer Portal currently enables customers to:
- Review existing Occam support tickets
- Open new (non-critical) tickets
- Search our growing library of Tech Tips
To use the portal you need a username and password, which can be obtained by sending an email to Ron Jeffries at rjeffries@occamnetworks.com with "Customer Portal" in the subject line. As a reminder to current users, the customer portal scripting requires a Microsoft Internet Explorer browser.
The Occam Customer Support team has plans to expand the capabilities of the portal over the coming months. If you have suggestions for how the portal can best serve you, please let us know by sending an email to support@occamnetworks.com.
