“We see Occam as market leaders and as innovators.  That is important to us, as is the stability of the vendor.  We've been in this business for 35 years, and the industry is probably more volatile than it's ever been. We were looking at long term investments.  We didn't want to purchase equipment from a company that we didn't think would be there for the long haul.  We wanted to deal with someone we thought would be around for awhile, that could provide the level of support we expect when we spend this kind of money. Occam satisfied all our concerns.  And, the Occam people are very knowledgeable, very responsive to our needs, and very easy to work with.”

The CEO ConnectionBob Howard-Anderson

Last week at IP Possibilities I joined three executives -- Rob Riordan, Executive Vice President of NSight, Harry Patz, Jr., General Manager, Communications Sector, North America of Microsoft and John Rose, President of OPASTCO -- for a keynote panel discussion.  Our topic was “What's Next for Broadband Connectivity.”  For those of you not in attendance, here are some of the key topics I covered during the discussion.

Bandwidth Trends. The demand for bandwidth continues to grow at a startling pace.  With broadband connectivity less than 10 years old, there are currently 56.1 million broadband subscribers in the United States alone.  In the last six years, we've seen the speed of ‘fast' bandwidth increase from 128kbps in 2000 to 5.0Mbps in 2006.  That's an increase of 40 percent.  At the same rate we can expect demand to increase to 200+Mbps by the year 2012.

“To Infinity and Beyond . . .”  Clearly, a fast connection is only the beginning for broadband.  More importantly, what are the services you can deliver using this fast connection.  I see the evolution of broadband occurring in four distinct phases:  Connectivity, Service Innovation, Service Management, and Service Customization.

Connectivity.  The first phase is to build a new infrastructure that improves existing services such as dial-up Internet access or cable. This new infrastructure is being rolled out in two stages.  First, there is DSL connectivity, which can be expected to last until around 2010.  Then, fiber connectivity with a life expectancy through 2012 and beyond.  The ability to deliver high-speed connections opens the door for delivering key services such as new voice service, high-speed Internet and IPTV.

Service Innovation.  The key to maintaining customer loyalty is to create a unique suite of services that can be delivered over broadband. Here are some examples of the kinds of services that subscribers are interested in.

View Poll

Service Management. Once the infrastructure is in place and you've begun to deliver these new, revenue generating services, how will you manage them?  Not with your existing management infrastructure.  Services like IPTV demand that you develop an understanding of traffic topologies and performance, in real time.  As with POTS, you must understand that quality of service equals a quality experience.

Service Customization.  The customization phase happens simultaneously with other phases.  In the new Web 2.0 world we see mashups, social networking, wikis and folksonomies – many novel forms of reusing existing applications in novel ways. A variety of entities such as Google, iTunes and YouTube will aggregate and publish content providing your subscribers with a range of services customized to meet the needs of particular audiences.

Keys to Success.  To leverage the bandwidth bonanza, you need to drive demand for new services that can take advantage of broadband bandwidth with creative pricing models that will increase average broadband rates while simultaneously growing revenues.  And, you must create a broadband infrastructure that is simple, scalable, flexible and cost-effective.  Attributes that only Ethernet and IP can provide!

Encountering Corner-Case Service Interruptions?

Occam BLC software resides into two distinct areas – on the blade and on the compact flash. On all Occam BLC products, blade software, which is referred to as the Booter build, is responsible for managing the hardware on the BLC, including the firmware for voice circuits, DSL chipsets, T1s, etc.  Compact flash software, which is referred to as the Kernel build, is responsible for managing the Operating System, including the Command Line Interface, the Web Interface and basic configuration of BLC services.

It is of paramount importance that these two versions match.  If there is a mismatch between the Kernel build and Booter build, it can lead to corner-case service interruptions, especially in DSL services and Ethernet packet handling.  Normally this can happen in one of the following scenarios:

  • The blade is exchanged or replaced with another blade that has a different Booter build installed
  • The blade is exchanged or replaced with another blade and boots up on the wrong partition
  • The command ‘upgrade software' is used rather than ‘upgrade all' when installing new software onto BLC blade

Fast Growing Georgia CLEC Building One of Southeast's Most Advanced Networks.

As part of its growth strategy, Access Integrated Networks, Inc. (AIN), a fast growing competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) headquartered in Macon, Georgia, has a goal of  transitioning business and residential customers from incumbent carrier, BellSouth, to AIN. Occam Networks is playing a large role in helping AIN build an advanced network that can fuel their growth phase now and into the future.

“Occam's BLC products help make this transition a smooth process,“ said Chris Aversano, vice president of operations at Access Integrated Networks.  “With more than 100,000 lines total that need to be moved to our switches, we look forward to working with Occam over the long term.”

Over the last two years the CLEC has purchased more than 35 thousand POTS ports from Occam, deploying BLC 6150, BLC 6151 and BLC 6252s blades.  The Occam blades convert TDM traffic to voice over IP (VoIP) for transport through BellSouth's Metro Ethernet network to the AIN softswitch.
