In Their Own Words: North Central Telephone Cooperative
"Occam Networks is an important part of our growth. We need to move to a fiber network, but plan to do so incrementally, Occam helped us significantly by working with us to create a hybrid copper/fiber network. NCTC has purchased components of Occam's BLC system to create this network with video over copper lines out to 5,000 feet and active FTTH to subscriber areas beyond that. This approach allows multiple streams of HD video as well as large amounts of bandwidth for other subscriber activity."
"We researched many access equipment companies and looked for a solution that would provide the best long-term operating and cost effectiveness. It was critical for us that our new access equipment deployed and turned up easily, it was also important that the solution would scale over time as we added both new subscribers and new services. Occam's solution passed all these tests with flying colors, they surpassed all of the other equipment providers we reviewed."
Ronnie Wilburn, Vice President of Operations

The CEO Connection

Business at Occam has never been more interesting or exciting. Last week we signaled our intention to add GPON
technology to our current products through the acquisition of Terawave Communications assets. Our goal with this purchase includes now offering a comprehensive range of access technologies, so that you only need to contact one company for all of your access needs.
Terawave is one of the leading GPON manufacturers and the company's technology and products are not only innovative, but are field tested. We are excited about the opportunity to leverage Terawave technology to deliver a superior set of fiber products. We will be providing you with more specific product information in the coming weeks when the transaction closes. Specific drivers for Occam's acquisition of Terawave include:
- FSAN ITU G.984 GPON interoperable technology,
- A broad offering of ONTs for residential and business,
- Technology directed towards Metro Ethernet, and,
- Technology license agreements to two leading silicon manufacturers: Ikanos Communications, Inc. and Mindspeed Technologies, Inc.
We've also just wrapped up one of our most valuable events of the year, the 3rd Annual User Conference. At that conference you made it loud and clear that you see FTTH as the future for your companies. We are committed to providing you with a variety of fiber options that can address your particular service plans, subscriber density and unique network requirements. Adding GPON products to our solution set will enable us to do that quickly and easily.
This year's User Conference provided us with an unequaled opportunity to have an open and frank dialogue with you about your plans and goals, issues and concerns. We always leave the User Conference invigorated and with a great sense of purpose as we move into planning for the coming year. We've previewed our plans and gotten your feedback, ideas and concerns, and we're ready to go to work creating the products, solutions and support you need to be successful.
At this year's event there were three main topics that I heard repeatedly. First, as I mentioned above, FTTH is the future for your companies. Fiber to the curb is of little interest to you. Everyone sees the demand for higher bandwidth continuing to grow, and grow quickly, making Ethernet-based backhaul over fiber a real must for you to keep up with growing traffic. And, the idea of putting new copper in the ground has been put to rest. When your subscribers ask for video your preferred method of delivery is FTTH, and when you build out a new greenfield deployment, it will be fiber.
Another topic on everyone's mind was 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The migration from TDM/ATM is well underway from the core to the access network. As you begin deploying "fatter pipes" in the access network, 10 Gigabit Ethernet for more scalable transport is becoming critically important.
And, lastly, you are all waiting for set top boxes that support HDTV and digital video recorders. Your customers clearly want these services, and you need the manufacturers to deliver on their promises.
I also heard that you see technology and applications continuing to get more complicated. As this happens, our ability to keep our technology, products and solutions simple remains important. And, you reported that we have made significant improvements in our support programs over the last year, showing that we value your input, that we listen to your suggestions and make every effort to make changes when necessary.
We place a very high value on your ideas, needs and expectations. You are our future.
Thank you for your participation in the 3rd Annual User Conference. See you next year in San Diego!
Bob Howard-Anderson
President and CEO, Occam Networks

Occam Signs Agreement to Purchase Certain Terawave Assets
Will add GPON technology to product line
On September 27th Occam announced that it intended to purchase certain assets of Terawave Communications, Inc., a leading manufacturer of GPON solutions.
Terawave was founded in 1998 by a team of engineers and scientists led by Ray Lin, CEO, to focus on the emerging fiber to the business and fiber to the home markets. "We believe that success in the fiber access market requires a broader set of service interfaces, such as POTS, DS1 and DSL," said Mr. Lin. "Integrating Terawave's optical technology with Occam's BLC 6000 should create a superior platform for carriers looking to deploy high speed access networks for the delivery of IP TV, higher speed internet and VoIP services." Terawave has an installed base of international customers and an OEM partnership with Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd. Read more...

ONUG: 2007 Users Conference – A Resounding Success
New products, the latest technologies and the Beach Olympics – you should have been there.
With a total of more than 225 attendees, the Third Annual Users Conference was our most successful conference ever. Customer participation grew by more than 50 percent with representatives from 77 IOCs in attendance at this year's event in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Ten of our most innovative partners joined us as we gathered to discuss the direction of Occam and its products, as well as the direction of technology and the industry with our customers. And, along the way, the entire group relaxed, had fun and got to know each other better.
Customer panels were the most popular sessions during the entire three-day event. On the first day, Gerry Grayson, of Hargray Telephone presented an overview of the telco's implementation and deployment of Occam products. Juan Vela moderated a panel consisting of Shane Broyles of Rural Telephone, Ray Cantrell of Ben Lomand Telephone, Tony Stout of Hargray and Heath Bowen of Valley Telecom Group. During the session panel members looked at the trends affecting the telecommunications industry such as Active and PON FTTH deployments and 10 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation and backhaul. Panel participants had lots of questions for the panelists, and both sessions were very interactive and very informative.
Additional highlights of this year's event included the keynote address, NTCA Perspective: Looking to the Future, presented by Kevin P. McGuire, Vice-President of Business and Technology for the NTCA. Kevin examined a range of industry drivers that are necessitating change across the industry and provided some practical ideas for keeping today's IOCs relevant in the future. And Ken Pyle of Viodi presented another keynote, IPTV Mash-Up: More Than Meets the "I" which was very informative and engaging. It was so well-received that we've asked Ken to present the same content in this month's webinar to give everyone who didn't attend this year's User Conference the chance to see it.
According to Manny Baron, General Manager for Brooke Telecom, "These events are an invaluable resource for us, and this year's event was no exception. We get focused, one-on-one time with Occam management and the technical staff to share our ideas and communicate the information we hear in the field, as well as hear their perspective on new technologies. It also gives us the chance to meet with other telcos from around the country, to hear what they are doing in their areas, and to learn from their experiences."
But what got everyone's blood really racing? The Beach Olympics, of course! Everyone's true competitive spirit came out as various participants divided into ten teams and competed in a variety of strenuous physical feats. Although everyone played to win, the Blue Team emerged as the winner, taking home a winner's plaque and goody bags. Bloody and bowed, but only temporarily defeated, the competing teams vowed to fight another day.
The whole event was so successful and enjoyable, we plan to do it again next year. Join us in September 2008 for another information-packed event in San Diego, California!

Joining the Leading Edge
New telco leaders join the Leading Edge.
North Central Telephone Cooperative (NCTC) of Macon County, Tennessee, has recently joined the Occam Leading Edge. The fast-growing telco selected the Broadband Loop Carrier System to upgrade its network with a hybrid copper/fiber solution that will provide its customers with advanced services, including Triple Play and IP video. When the network upgrade is complete, the telco's hybrid network can deliver video over copper lines to 5,000 feet and active FTTH to subscribers beyond that distance. The network can deliver multiple streams of high definition video, as well as significant amounts of data bandwidth to subscribers.
"In addition to ease of deployment and turn up, scalability and reliability, we researched solutions that would provide the best long term operating and cost effectiveness," said Ronnie Wilburn, Vice President of Operations for NCTC. "The Occam solution both fit into our network seamlessly and has a demonstrated track record of reducing telcos' operating expenses. Occam surpassed several other telecom access equipment providers we reviewed." Read more...

The Power of Partnership
Partners play integral role in success of User Conference.
Partnership is defined as "A relationship between individuals or groups that is characterized by mutual cooperation and responsibility." And, that definition certainly proved true at this year's Occam Networks User Group Conference where our partners played an integral role in helping us present a comprehensive forum of information and ideas to help you become more successful.
At this year's event we had a total of 10 partner participants, including our Platinum Sponsor, MetaSwitch, and 10 Silver Sponsors, including Actelis, Comtrend, CopperCom, VisionNet, Hatteras Networks, Starbridge Networks, TXP, Tandberg Television and Verso Technologies. You will recognize these names as some of the leading providers of products and solutions for the new telecommunications network.
Each of our partners worked tirelessly to ensure that your experience was informative, productive and lots of fun. Andrew Randall of MetaSwitch presented The Shifting Telecom Landscape: What Should You Be Doing Today To Prepare For Tomorrow.
Partner seminars were among the most popular and well-attended events at the conference. Starbridge, Comtrend and DQ Technology presented the seminar, CPE Implications of Advanced Service Delivery: It Ain't All About The Set Top Box; Actelis, Hatteras and TXP teamed up to present, Decision Point: Copper or Fiber for Next Gen Services; and CopperCom, Verso and Tandberg wowed the crowd with IP Everywhere: End-to-End Voice, Data and Video.
A hearty thank you to all our partners from Occam and all our attendees for making this year's conference better than ever. The Power of Partnership at work for you!
