SKYSTREAM AND OCCAM PARTNER TO DELIVER IP-BASED “TRIPLE PLAY”

SkyStream Mediaplex Integrated with Occam BLC 6000 Platform

SUNNYVALE and SANTA BARBARA, Calif., October 13, 2003SkyStream Networks®, a leading provider of video networking solutions, and Occam Networks, a supplier of innovative Ethernet and IP-based loop carrier equipment to telecommunications companies worldwide, today announced an agreement to offer the U.S. telco market a completely IP-based solution for the delivery of the “triple play” of advanced video, data and voice services.

Many of today's “Telco TV” deployments use a video-over-ATM service delivery method. SkyStream's Mediaplex-20™ Video Services Router allows customers to migrate from legacy video-over-ATM broadband environments to a more flexible, cost-effective video-over-IP environment. Customers interested in distributing the video content to remote sites, or reselling the live broadcast or VOD content to other operators may convert existing video-over-ATM to video-over-IP-over-ATM or video-over-IP-over-Gigabit Ethernet at their master headend, or at the remote sites.

“Mediaplex's ability to convert video-over-ATM to IP at the edge of the network allows it to serve as a bridge between legacy deployments and totally IP-based services,” said Bethany Mayer, vice president of product marketing for SkyStream. “The combination of Mediaplex and Occam's BLC platform is the most scalable and least expensive way to deliver video-over-broadband available today.”

Mediaplex provides a number of functions necessary to build a complete video-over-broadband delivery system in a remote site. These functions include the addition of local channels, integration with an Emergency Alert System, and video rate adaptation and rate shaping functions. Mediaplex also allows reliable video delivery over an IP backhaul environment through real-time Forward Error Correction and video retransmission.

The combination of SkyStream's Mediaplex with Occam Networks' Broadband Loop Carrier BLC 6000 delivers full IP quality-of-service parameters from the video origination point—the SkyStream headend—through the IP-enabled Occam access network, all the way to the user's home, allowing operators to build an extremely cost-effective broadband system for the deliver of video, voice and data services.

“Telcos need to invest in new strategies and architectures for the deployment of integrated video, voice and data services that will raise their revenues per user,” said Russ Sharer, vice president of sales and marketing for Occam. “Mediaplex-20 and Occam 's BLC 6000 give service providers a competitive, sustainable, cost-effective voice, video and data platform.”

Occam's BLC 6000 System is the first modular loop carrier system that integrates standard IP protocols for transport and control, offers scalable Ethernet trunking and eliminates the need for additional pieces of access equipment such as a DSLAM, Ethernet switch, Optical Add Drop multiplexer and VoIP gateway. The BLC 6000 System is also the first loop carrier using Gigabit Ethernet transport, which provides cost effective bandwidth for high numbers of DSL subscribers, video distribution or delivery of triple play services.
