Occam Networks' GPON Solution Chosen by Two Telcos Focused on Simplicity and Time to Revenue
Occam's GPON Products Deliver On-Demand Triple Play at Full GPON Line Rate
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – June 12, 2008 – Two North American telecommunications service providers have selected Occam Networks' GPON products to deliver fiber to the premise (FTTP) and advanced voice, data and video services. Occam Networks® Inc. (NASDAQ: OCNW) is a leading broadband access supplier, offering multiservice access platform (MSAP) solutions based on pure packet technologies. The service providers include Sogetel of Quebec, Canada and Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative based in Oxford, Wisconsin.

Sogetel, an independent telecommunications company, operates nearly 26,000 telephone access lines in four geographic areas (Beauce-Etchemins, Centre-du-Quebec, Maskinongé and Saint-Liboire) of Quebec through an optical fiber network linking each sector with major urban centers. After evaluating many fiber access solutions, Sogetel chose Occam’s GPON product based on the findings that Occam’s innovation, high performance and ease of use exceeded competitive products in all categories. The company plans to continue to use Occam’s BLC equipment to expand their offerings for subscribers.
Marquette-Adams currently provides triple play services to their customers over Occam’s ADSL2Plus platform, but with the rising demand for high definition TV, video-on-demand and the expectation of additional broadband services in the future, the company felt the need to offer more bandwidth to their customers. They have successfully deployed Occam’s GPON solution as part of their network evolution strategy and plan to achieve their goal of 100% deployment of FTTH in the next 3-4 years. Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative offers subscribers local and long distance telephone service, IPTV, DSL and Web hosting, and operates 3,500 access lines.

At the center of Occam’s GPON solution is the Occam Packet Engine, developed specifically to support the massive Ethernet switching and IP packet processing that triple play networks require. Using this chip, a single OLT blade switches packets at rates up to 15 Gigabits per second, can be field upgraded to perform deep packet inspection, manages 2,048 data streams, and delivers hardware-based QoS, security, and multicast management. The GPON solution consists of the BLC 6322 Optical Line Terminal (OLT) blade and ON 2400 series Optical Network Terminals (ONT).
Unlike access systems that layer GPON onto older, cell based technology, the Occam system supports full line-rate bandwidth for every GPON port simultaneously. In addition, Occam’s innovative GPON solution integrates 10G transport – a key enabler of FTTP architectures. This is critical for high IP-HDTV on-demand take rates. As Ethernet based broadband continues to displace alternative options, Occam’s GPON solution marks the next generation of FTTP.
