  • Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) 9 and 14 certified
  • Delivers business and metro Ethernet services

The Occam BLC 6450 Access Aggregation blade lets service providers build 10Gigabit Ethernet aggregation networks that eliminate bandwidth constraints by utilizing the full 10GigE switch fabric and shifting the IP addressing burden to core routers. These networks provide the operational simplicity of Layer 2 switched access and aggregation without the cost and complexity of Layer 3 routers, MPLS or VPLS administration. BLC 6000 aggregation networks deliver twice the bandwidth of an OC-192 at a fraction of the cost and, when incorporating patented Occam EPS technology, deliver redundancy and reliability comparable to traditional SONET rings.

Each BLC 6450 blade is equipped with two 10GigE optical, sixteen GigE optical, two 10 Gbps copper, and six 10/100/1000BaseT copper interfaces. Small form-factor pluggable (SFP/XFP) transceivers terminate fiber connections, enabling a service provider to activate a fiber port when additional capacity is required, lowering initial CapEx costs.

The BLC 6450 can also be used to deliver business and metro Ethernet services and build optical 10GigE aggregation rings or GigE access rings. Access rings consisting of BLC 6000-based FTTP optical line terminal (OLT), DSL and Lifeline voice blades can be subtended from the BLC 6450 aggregation rings from multiple CO or remote terminal cabinet locations with load sharing, redundancy and common management. A failure in one ring is isolated to that ring and does not affect services in any other part of the network. Each ring supports dynamic load balancing of multicast traffic for video service delivery and can also be configured to enable load-balanced unicast traffic.

BLC 6450-based aggregation rings are not restricted to the MAC learning limits normally associated with Layer 2 switching devices. Individual Layer 2 domains can scale from 8K to 32K MAC devices. Multiple access domains can be aggregated using redundant pairs of BLC 6450 blades to create highly scalable and easily managed access networks with a single, uniform interface to the core network.

Business Ethernet Services

The BLC 6450 transforms private lines and virtual private lines from commodity services to fully managed Carrier Ethernet data services, providing exceptional value to enterprise customers. Service providers can offer transparent LAN services (TLS) to corporations, universities and private enterprises using a low cost, scalable solution supporting E-Line or E-LAN services, point-to-point or multipoint-to-multipoint applications across a BLC 6000 network. In addition to transparent LAN services the BLC 6450 provides managed services such as Internet data, voice and video. It can be deployed in metro Ethernet ring configurations combining business access with Ethernet transport. These capabilities create additional revenue opportunities and network efficiencies as enterprises look to service providers for advanced service and networking capabilities.

Common OS Enhances Blade Operation and Service Management

Like all BLC 6000 blades, the BLC 6450 features OccamOS, a common operating system that spans the entire range of BLC 6000 copper, Gigabit Ethernet and GPON products to provide consistent and uniform system and service attributes. This OS integrates a wide range of Occam copper and optical broadband technological advancements including the company’s patented IP Security Management (IPSM), which allows for dynamic, “hands free” network security.

OccamOS also offers excellent tools to identify and troubleshoot Internet, voice and IPTV delivery problems including a full set of notification events, statistics and service assurance tools that allows for dynamic monitoring of any IPTV stream at any point in the network. And Ethernet Protection Switching (EPS) delivers “five nines” network availability, flexible network topologies and use of all network bandwidth through traffic load balancing during normal operation.
