BLC 6000 Blades
BLC 6440-01 Gigabit Optical Ethernet Transport
The 6440-01 Optical Packet Transport blade and BLC 6440-01 Assembly provide Gigabit Ethernet transport and direct next generation softswitch connection capability for the BLC 6000 Broadband Loop Carrier system. All voice traffic in a BLC 6000 system is carried as VoIP with MGCP signaling. The 6440-01 Blade is a high performance, fully capable Ethernet switch with 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports — 4 optical and 6 copper. Each blade also has 8 DS1 ports.

The 6440-01 supports Transparent Circuit Emulation Service by transporting the whole DS1 circuit through the network. This can either be synchronized to the network timing or operate with independent clocking. The 6440-01 can also cross-connect and transport individual DS0 circuits over the BLC 6000 IP network. In this mode, a DS0 circuit from multiple customers can be assigned to a DS1 connection headed either to the local Class 5 switch, to the Digital Access Cross-connect private line network or to support special services converters such as Enterprise Business (Nortel P-phone) Service.
The 6440-01 Blade can be deployed standalone as the BLC 6440-01 Assembly, or it can be used in high density deployments with other BLC 6000 Blades in the BLC 6012 high capacity chassis. The single blade BLC 6440-01 Assembly may be stacked with additional units to add capacity and hardware redundancy, and can be stacked with other BLC 6000 units for full system capabilities.
Ethernet Transport Flexibility
The 6440-01 Blade and BLC 6440-01 Assembly are designed for a wide range of network applications. The flexibility of Ethernet switching allows any port to be used for any service or transport. The 4 fiber Gigabit Ethernet ports, when connected to other blades in the network, can be used to create a 1 GigE feeder transport network with a virtually unlimited number of nodes and topologies. This flexibility makes the 6440-01 ideal for high capacity feeder transport for all services in the loop network.
The GigE ports can also be used for customer connections in offering very high speed data services. Transparent LAN services can be provided to corporations, universities and other large customers where VLAN tags are transported across the BLC network for private Ethernet networking.
The Intelligent Blade Interconnect Architecture of the BLC 6000 features distributed processing intelligence and a unique blade interconnection system that allows unprecedented flexibility for cost effective configurations in low, medium and high density applications. The copper Gigabit Ethernet ports are implemented in pairs and are typically used for protected interconnection with other blades, either in a stack or through the backplane of the high density chassis. The copper GigE ports can also be used to connect other collocated, high speed Ethernet devices to the network, such as video headends and Internet routers.
The DS1 ports can also be configured for MLPPP and used as part of the protected feeder network for remote terminals over copper feeder plant for voice and Internet data services.
Direct Network Connection to Next Generation Softswitches
The 6440-01 Blade and BLC 6440-01 Assembly can be used in the central office for seamless network connection to softswitch platforms. Any of the Ethernet ports can be used for this purpose. BLC 6000 networks ease the circuit-to-packet transition and yield additional cost savings in the access network by eliminating the Class 5 interfaces on the loop carrier side. The 6440-01 provides the protected feeder network transport required to sustain voice calls in the event of single network faults.
