BLC 6000 Blades

BLC 6450 10 GbE Aggregation Rings, Access Rings, Point-to-point and Business Ethernet Services

BLC 6450 delivers Access Aggregation with 10 GbE capacity, scalability and ease of deployment surpassing current state of the art access solutions today. When configured in topologies using the Occam patented EPS technology, the BLC 6450 delivers redundancy and reliability comparable to traditional SONET rings with twice the bandwidth of an OC-192 at a fraction of the cost. Network restoration after a link failure meets or exceeds the sub 50ms telco requirement for guaranteeing service level agreements between the service provider and the end user. The BLC 6450 provides 10 Gigabit Optical Ethernet Aggregation rings, Gigabit Ethernet access rings and Business Ethernet Services in a modular chassis. Access rings consisting of BLC 6000-based FTTP Optical Line Terminal (OLT), ADSL2Plus and Lifeline POTS can be subtended from the BLC 6450 aggregation rings from multiple CO or Remote Terminal Cabinet locations with loadsharing, redundancy and common management.

The BLC 6450 increases capacity of Ethernet protected access networks by supporting 10 Gigabit Aggregation Rings and subtended subscriber access Rings as well as business Ethernet services. By utilizing Layer 2 switching the BLC 6450 Access Aggregation Blade delivers fast, deterministic wire speed performance and carrier - grade reliability without the complexity of routing, MPLS or VPLS administration. Each blade supports two 10 GbE optical, two 10 GbE copper, sixteen 1 GbE optical and six 10/100/1000X copper interfaces. Each interface is fully configurable and may be used for subtended subscriber Access Rings or for providing business Ethernet services. Fiber termination is via SFP, reducing the installed cost until the capacity of the blade is required. Costly optics are installed as needed when the port is activated.

Both aggregation and subtended access networks are protected from equipment failure and fiber cuts when configured in redundant rings. Failures in one ring are isolated to that ring and do not affect services in any other part of the network. Each ring supports dynamic load balancing of multicast traffic for video service delivery and can also be configured to enable loadbalanced unicast traffic.

Aggregation Rings are not restricted to MAC learning limits normally associated with Layer 2 switching devices. Individual Access Rings may scale up to 8K MAC devices per ring. Multiple Access Rings may be aggregated using redundant pairs of BLC Blades to form highly scalable access networks, thus enabling a uniform interface to the network core at one location.

Business Ethernet services may be delivered with up to 1000 protected VLANs available for Transparent LAN Services including E-LINE and E-LAN EVCs or managed services. Business Ethernet interfaces enable service providers to transform private lines and virtual private lines from commodity services to fully managed data services based on Carrier Ethernet, providing exceptional value to enterprise customers. The 6450 managed service capabilities create additional revenue opportunities for telcos as enterprises continue to outsource their networks as a cost saving measure.

The 6450 Blade can be deployed standalone as the BLC 6450 Assembly, or it can be used in applications with other BLC 6000 Blades in the BLC 6012 high capacity chassis. The 1RU BLC 6450 Assembly can be stacked with additional units to add capacity and hardware redundancy and can be stacked with other BLC 6000 Assemblies for full system capabilities.

Ethernet Transport Flexibility
The BLC 6450 is designed for a wide range of network applications. The flexibility of Ethernet switching allows any port to be used for business Ethernet or EPS protected aggregation. Any of the sixteen fiber Gigabit Ethernet ports can be connected to other blades in the network to create a 1 Gigabit Ethernet protected feeder transport network from a 10 Gigabit transport with a virtually unlimited number of nodes and topologies. This flexibility makes the BLC 6450 ideal for high capacity aggregation of all services in the access network.

The Intelligent Blade Interconnect Architecture of the BLC 6000 features distributed processing intelligence and a unique blade interconnection system that allows the flexibility of cost effective configurations in low, medium and high-density applications. The six copper Gigabit Ethernet ports are typically used for protected interconnection with other blades. The copper Gigabit Ethernet ports can also be used to connect other collocated, high-speed Ethernet devices to the network such as video headends and Internet routers.

Business Ethernet Services
The BLC 6450 delivers Ethernet services for geographically dispersed businesses. Service providers may offer Transparent LAN Services to corporations, universities and private enterprises using a low cost, scalable solution supporting E-LINE or E-LAN EVC, point-to-point or multipoint-to-multipoint, applications across the BLC network. In addition to Transparent LAN Services the BLC 6450 provides managed services such as Internet data, voice and video services. The solution provides a rich set of features for service classification, policing and shaping for ingress and egress traffic flows complete with Occam’s IP Security Management framework available on a per service basis with support for IGMP, DHCP Relay, Proxy ARP, MAC forced forwarding, Denial of Service protection and other mechanisms.
